Am I being retentive?

So we went to the Fireside Singers Monday night. It was pretty good. Traffic was nutz but we arrived on time, found a parking spot that was right at the end of a row, pretty much in a driving lane. No way anybody could’ve parked beside me right? Wrong. And of course the handicapped spots were fully taken by people who drove vehicles you need a ladder or mountain climbing gear to get into so I’m thinking they didn’t need the spot as bad as I coulda used it but whatever… except the ramps to the sidewalks were blocked by those big vehicles also so we walked around the church until, with Angie’s significant help, I climbed a curb & got in outta the freezing wind. I should have dressed a bit warmer, but I woulda been fine if that first ramp wasn’t blocked. But minor frostbite was the price I paid. My ear only throbbed until about 10:30 last night though it still has a twinge of pain.

Again, the concert was pretty good. Some of the soloists hit these notes that hurt my eardrums. I do not deny their talent and I know some of my fav music hurts my parents’ eardrums, but these notes were the type to make crystal glasses ring. There were others that were very good, but silent night was kinda funny the way they did it. Whatever that is yet another tangent I’ve gone off on… must be listening to many messages from R. Alm lately at church. :P

My complaint comes with the whole Santa issue. I’ve never had much use for the concept but never let it bother me. Last night however it did. A song performed by the female singers began with a Santa coming out, sitting in a chair in front of the women as they began to sing, all dressed in a very nice black pants & turtleneck or a nice black dress. The music picks up tempo, one woman steps forward, tears off the top half of her dress to reveal the true outfit which was a far more suggestive dress, all the while singing about what she was for Christmas while sitting on Santa’s lap. Other women begin their parts and before long Santa is surrounded by these women greedily asking for things (Convertible cars, money, jewelry) while stroking his beard and acting like… I can’t think of a nice word… proactive women. A beautiful concert celebrating Jesus’ birth at the beginning… then that. Greed, promiscuity, and Santa, just not what Christmas is about. It was so nice otherwise.

So am I being anal? “It’s just a little bit of fun!” some may say. Yep… maybe. But is Easter about chocolate & a bunny? Is it “just a little bit of fun” to look lustfully towards someone you aren’t married to? To God it is adultery! A spark can start a fire that wipes out a forest. I enjoy the excitement in kids’ eyes when they see Santa at the mall but they need to know what Christmas is truly about and that number last night hurt me like when I hear someone take the Lord’s name in vain.

I am in a Christmas mood & I’m excited about all of the events coming up, I just felt a need to make a firm statement of my feelings on that subject. I truly wish everyone a merry Christmas! :)

Check your sock drawer…

So my mom was bringing up a bunch of gift bags from storage and she got looking. Out of a bag fell an unopened envelope labeled to me from my uncle and aunt for a $10 gift of music from Music World. It was dated 1998 & Music World hasn’t been in Swift Current since about 2000! Yup, I’ve heard of hidden gifts getting lost for a year or so until the Christmas stuff comes out of storage but 6 years… wow! But it’s expired so it was a $10 chuckle & blog. :P
